A Return to Real Food

Thursday, December 10th, 2009
We have become so disconnected from nature that we have forgotten what real food is. It is time to relearn how to live with the planet.

HWFC seeks Candidates for
Board of Directors

It's that time of year again! Here's how to throw your hat in the ring:

1.    Check your credentials. To run, you must be an active working member and up-to-date in your share payments. Some desirable qualities are a commitment to cooperative principles, working well with others coming from diverse perspectives and backgrounds, good organization skills and familiarity with reading financial statements. Experience with business development, construction, project management, fundraising, or group facilitation would be wonderful but are not essential.

2.    Consider the commitment. Each Board members participates monthly in board meetings (currently the first Tuesday of the month), serves as a liaison to a co-op committee, and may attend special events, problem-solving sessions, trainings, etc. They communicate via email, phone, and in person. This is a part-time job, with responsibilities. Expect to spend roughly 16 hours per month. We're not trying to scare you, this job has many rewards; but it takes up space in your mind and your life .Term lengths are for three years

If you are game, then:

3.    Fill out the candidate information form you'll find at the Service Desk at the Coop. This is your first written presentation, which will be photocopied and circulated, and posted in the store.*

4.    [Suggested: Write up a summary* of the key points in your candidate information form (~100 words) and submit it via email or disk to Judy Trupin, Coop Scoop Editor, by March 8th (trupinjet@gmail.com). Your blurb will be published in the April issue of the Coop Scoop if received in time]

5.    Plan to Attend the Annual Meeting & Election on April 18th  at the First Unitarian-Universalist Church, 405 Washington Avenue, Albany, NY.  The Meet and Greet Dessert Potluck is at 5:30 PM and the meeting begins at 6 PM.

6.    [Suggested] If you haven't ever attended a board meeting, try to.  It's a great way to see how it all works. Next two: Tuesdays, March 2nd and April 6th, at 5:30 PM in the Community Room at the Co-op.

* Nominations can be accepted as late as from the floor at the election - but if you want people to vote for you it is better if they know who you are and what you're thinking!

HWFC & WAMC present
"A Sea Change"
Food for Thought: An Evening of Socially Relevant Cinema

Thursday, March 18th, 6:00 PM  - $6

Co-presented by the Honest Weight Food Co-op and WAMC's Documentary Film Series, Food For Thought is a monthly evening of food, film and discussion with a focus on films of social, political, environmental and community interest. Held on the third Thursday of each month, the night features food samples by Honest Weight Food Co-op, a feature film screening, and an open panel discussion.

It's a frightening premise, and it's happening right now. A Sea Change follows the journey of retired history teacher Sven Huseby on his quest to discover what is happening to the world's oceans. After reading Elizabeth Kolbert's "The Darkening Sea," Sven becomes obsessed with the rising acidity of the oceans and what this "sea change" bodes for mankind. His quest takes him to Alaska, California, Washington, and Norway as he uncovers a worldwide crisis that most people are unaware of. Speaking with oceanographers, marine biologists, climatologists, and artists, Sven discovers that global warming is only half the story of the environmental catastrophe that awaits us. Excess carbon dioxide is dissolving in our oceans, changing sea water chemistry. The more acidic water makes it difficult for tiny creatures at the bottom of the food web to form their shells. The effects could work their way up to the fish 1 billion people depend upon for their source of protein.

Guest panelists:
Barbara Ettinger, Director/Co-Producer - Barbara Ettinger's previous projects include Two Square Miles, produced through Niijii Films, the production company she co-owns with her husband Sven Huseby. Two Square Miles aired on PBS's Independent Lens. Her first film was Martha and Ethel, which screened at Sundance.

Sven Huseby, Co-Producer - Sven Huseby co-produced Two Square Miles and serves on the board of several environmental organizations; he is a retired independent school head who worked as a teacher and administrator at The Putney School for 30 years. He remains involved with non-profits to build organizational capacity and to plan for the long term. He has a B.A. in history from Yale.
