From the Grocery

by Erik Anderson

Two major themes appear in this month's new products - canned goods and spaghetti sauce.

Natural Value has released a line of canned beans, each of which is vegan, kosher and fat free. The varieties of the "fiber rich" delights include red kidney beans, garbanzo beans, black beans, and pinto beans.

Fitting into both the canned goods and pasta sauce categories is Annie's Homegrown, which has released a line of canned spaghetti that has Bernie the Rabbit's "rabbit of approval." In comes in the three different styles: All Star star pasta, Bernie O's rabbit-shaped pasta, and P'sghetti Loops loop-shaped pasta. Each of these is bound to delight a child and the parent, especially if their little one starts calling spaghetti "p'sghetti."

Out of the can and into the jar come two new spaghetti sauces from Casa Visco. The local manufacturer out of Rotterdam offers Fra Diavolo, a medium sauce, and Filetto di Pomodoro, a special summer recipe. Another new pasta sauce made nearby is Bove's, which is made in Bur-lington (Vt.) and comes in some interesting flavors - including Vodka, Roasted Red Pepper, and Chianti Mushroom. Nate has expressed the opinion that Bove's Vodka sauce is the best jarred sauce he's ever tasted.

Bionaturae has released Organic Tomato Paste made from the historically neglected Tuscan tomato. However, with Bionaturae's devotion the Tuscan Tomato's unique flavor and their quality product, the Tuscan tomato will be preserved.

If the Tuscan tomato doesn't have enough of the right flavors for you, you might want to go to Lima , and season the dish with one of their new sea-salt seasonings. These seasonings include herb salt, pepper, and garlic-parsley, and each seasoning includes sea salt from the French Atlantic. (Lima kindly asks that you don't boycott their product, claiming that French Atlantic sea salt has nothing to do with France's politics. However, I am still thoughtlessly suspicious. (And some of us pacifists may want to hope that it does have to do with French politics - and buy it for that reason!!!-ED.)

Not Canned and Not for Pasta

If you have trouble deciding your politics, you may be too exhausted to decide what mayonnaise is right for you. Follow Your Heart allows for an easy decision with their Organic Vegenaise, a non-egg dairy-free mayo substitute. And I heard it through the aisles that is spreads well over Food For Life Low Carbohydrate Bread . Given current nutrition beliefs, Food For Life's low-carb bread can make you a full-time eater of fat for life.

It's time to wash all of this down with two new beverages. Ghiradelli is offering a Double Chocolate cocoa mix. And Saratoga Water, although not a new product, has a new bottle titled Saratoga Blues . The bottle has a cool and classy design of blues musicians playing the blues.

Maybe they will stop singing the blues once they hear of Old Wessex Ltd.'s 5-Grain Cereal . This cereal quintet is comprised of oats, rye, triticale, barley, and golden flax on tenor sax, together serving up a sound 454MG omega-3 per breakfast session.
