HWFC donations policyby Nate Horwitz Many of you probably aren't aware (as nothing's been written about it here in some time!) that the Coop has an active policy of giving donations of food to local community groups. If your group is looking for a donation, and your group's mission is in line with the Coop's, then we encourage you to pick up a donation form from the service desk - but please don't wait until the last day to do so! Most donations that we reject aren't done so because we don't like the organization - they're usually rejected via a passive process of the event passing before we had a chance to look at the request! Please give us some time. Honest Weight donates money strictly to local, grass-roots organizations - some of which may be nationally affiliated. We generally don't give to organizations that are overtly political or religious, although we will sometimes make donations to organizations that support political issues that are clearly aligned with what we do here (e.g., organic food issues), or religious organizations that are involved in non-proselytizing activities that we believe in (e.g., Thanksgiving meals for those in need.) Some of the groups that we've given donations to this year include: Albany Free School, Martin Luther King Solidarity Committee of the Capital District, Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Homeless Action Committee, Capital District Community Gardens, Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission, Project Strive (an organization that works with people with disabilities), Historic Albany Foundation, Women Against War, Equinox, and the Guilderland "Y." All of these donations were for specific events. We generally don't do donations unless the local organization has a specific event coming up. |
