New on the Shelf

Introducing People’s Bakery breads from Monroe Bridge (Mass.).  These regional bread products are made with whole spelt flour and are available in four seed, raisin cinnamon (not to be confused with cinnamon raisin), common bread, multi grain and spelt rolls.

Zhena’s Gypsy Tea Aromatherapeutic Tea Sachets are as tasty as their pretty packaging might suggest.  The elaborate vtins that protect these delicate teas are eco-conscious as well as decorative because they are made of steel, which is a more energy-efficient material to recycle-75% less energy is expended in its recycling process than with iron ore.  Steel can be recycled over and over again, while never losing its original quality and strength-so remember to reuse or recycle this tin when the tea is gone!  As part of Zhena’s Gypsy Tea’s “social responsibility programs,” a portion of the proceeds from Ambrosia White Plum, Gypsy Earl Green, Precious Lemon Rooibos and Uplifting Earl Grey are donated to the non-profit organization C.E.O. Women.  All varieties of Zhena’s Gypsy Tea is 100% Fair Trade and organic.

Tucked away in the Kombucha cooler you’ll find Jones 24C “vitamin enhanced” flavored water sweetened with inverted cane sugar.  Flavors include Cranberry Apple and Tropical Citrus.  Jones 24C is the latest addition to a line of beverages from the Jones Soda Co., most notably known for the artsy photographs on the labels of their cane sugar sodas.  These photographs are submitted by Jones Soda drinkers and are constantly changing, making the soda something of a novelty beverage and creating a company culture that is interactive with its consumers.

There’s a whole lot going on in the refrigerated and freezer section of the store, with recent additions from Rising Moon Organics, makers of delectably diverse varieties of organic pasta and raviolis.  They have expanded their line of products to organic pizzas, pestos and salsas.  Not too shabby for a company that started as a two-person subscription service with bicycle delivery.  For recipe ideas, check out their website at www.risingmoon.com.

Locally made, Against the Grain (gluten-free!) baguettes are artisan breads made in Brattleboro (Vt.).  Thomas and Nancy Cain, who were interested in establishing “dietary normalcy” for people with celiac disease including their own son), founded this company in 2005, and use ingredients from local growers and producers when available.

Sno-pac organic frozen cranberries, a century old, family owned and operated company, and pre-made manicotti and stuffed shells by Caesar’s Organic, the organic line of products founded in 1005 from family based, 40 year-old Caesar’s Pasta company, can now be found there too.

Pure Fun organic candy, an entire line of candy that includes fruit rocks, pinwheels (of the fruit and mint variety), chocolate meltdowns, citrus slices and pure pops…you’ll have to try them to figure out their titles.  Pure Fun is committed to using Fair Trade suppliers, and the cane sugar used for these candies is not only free of chemical sprays, but “green cut” by hand, as well.  All candies are kosher and vegan, and free of cholesterol, trans fats, GMOs, chemicals, gluten, synthetic flavors and artificial FD and C colors.
