Focus on Herbs: Red
Clover

The clubs suit in playing
cards was originally modeled after clover. It has been known throughout
history as a symbol of religion and health. Four-leaf clovers have been
a symbol of good luck, but the merits of the plant go far beyond luck.
Related to peas and beans, clover is one of the oldest crops,
cultivated since prehistoric times. Adding nitrogen to the earth, its
roots break up compacted soil. It was the leading crop until being
surpassed by alfalfa.
The Druids held clover sacred, and it was the early Irish emblem, which
eventually was transformed into a shamrock and the trinity. During the
Irish famines, dried clover flowers and seeds were used to make bread.
In the Middle Ages, clover was used as a charm against witchcraft. It
was widely found in Greek garlands and decorations.
Even today, clover is used in dried flower arrangements and potpourris.
Not only is it an excellent source of honey, but the leaves and flowers
of clover can be used in many food preparations. Chinese physicians
have used clover blossoms as an expectorant. Russians have long treated
asthma with clover.
Later, in the 19th century, clover was part of many patent medicines.
Its use extends to salves, poultices, sedatives, cough medications and
cancer treatment remedies. Externally, it has been used topically to
heal eczema, psoriasis and cancerous growths. Internally, it is noted
as a diuretic, digestive aid, a cleanser and detoxifier, bronchial
remedy and anti-inflammatory. Since large quantities react like
estrogen, it may help relieve menopausal symptoms.
Clover should not be used for children under 2 years of age. Older
children and adults over age 65 should gradually increase the amount,
starting with low dosages. It is suggested that women on birth control
pills consult with a doctor prior to using large quantities of clover.
The Co-op carries red clover in single and compound tinctures, loose,
in a liquid herbal detoxifying formula called Jean's Greens 4+1, and in
honey. There is also an array of cleansing kits from which to choose,
all containing clover. If spring cleaning is on your mind, this is the
perfect time of year to try out a cleansing formula designed for the
body's spring cleaning.
