Staff Profile: David Aube

by Merci Miglino

"Shopping should not be a struggle", says David Aube. "There are too many worthy struggles out there - and shopping isn't one of them."

With this mission in mind, David - assistant grocery manager at the Honest Weight Food Coop - spends his days making shopping for our members and customers as pleasant and efficient an experience as possible.

"I make sure the shelves are full and organized," explains David. "Customers shouldn't have to hunt for things. I want our displays to be convenient and attractive, to make selecting and buying a product at Honest Weight an easy thing."

David's primary responsibilities involve grocery items that are dry goods, except for bulk items, freezer and non-diary products. David works with a team of staff and members including his immediate supervisor, grocery buyer and merchandiser Nancy Reich. Also on the team are grocery assistants Keith Brennan, Dominic Knipfing, Eric Schou, Lee Wilson, and Russell Ziemba.

People here at the Coop are so hard-working. What they do is truly remarkable," said David, who especially appreciates the Coop as an economic enterprise that gives people "power" and "greater choice" over their food budgets.

A Coop member since 1987, David began working for Honest Weight in 1997. Prior to accepting a position with the Coop, David was the office manager for the Citizen's Environmental Coalition for seven years. He also has extensive management and grocery store experience, having spent summers working in a grocery in Hampton Bays, on Long Island, where he grew up.

David is especially proud of his displays, which allow him to position merchandise creatively with accessibility and service in mind. "This is my niche," said David. "where the artist in me can work."

When he's not working on sales displays that "jump out at the customer," David and his wife Ellen Sherman are enjoying their delightful 6-month-old daughter, Andrea Virginia Sherman Aube.
