Staff Profile:
John Haag

by Christy Articola

John Haag has been a part of the Coop for eight years now. He was one of our very first deli workers and also served as assistant deli manager for three and a half years before personally creating his current position of assistant bulk manager.

John first heard about HWFC through friends. He grew up in Saratoga, but after moving to Albany after high school he quickly decided to become a member. About a month later, he was hired on the staff and he has been a staff member ever since (except for the two years he lived on Long Island attending music school). As assistant bulk manager, John does pretty much everything that bulk manager Bob Linn does. He spends a great deal of his time at the Coop stocking bulk items. As we all know, our bulk products are very popular — but thanks to the bulk department staff, it’s rare to see the bins less than full! Additionally, John does much of the bulk ordering, manages member workers, and does the department scheduling.

“Also, I answer a lot of questions,” John adds, “like ‘How do you cook this?’” Of course, John is more than happy to help! His favorite part about the Coop is the people: “The diversity of the people is pretty amazing,” he says. As for the products, John’s favorite is undoubtedly our Vegan Chocolate Covered Almonds. He’s also a big fan of the Coop’s fresh fruit — particularly the pomegranates and mangoes.

Unfortunately for the Coop, John recently cut his hours back severely, to a mere 15 or so per week. The reason? He has decided to devote more time to his music. He is the bassist for Oshe (www.oshe.org), an improvisational jazz fusion quartet that’s rapidly gaining popularity in the Northeast. (Now on tour, their next show in the Capital District falls on Friday, December 23 at Red Square, 388 Broadway in Albany.) Between his hours at the Coop and time he spends on his music, John admits that he has absolutely no free time. However, he does enjoy cooking when he has the chance — and of course, playing his bass. John lived in Albany for many years but recently moved to Troy, where he currently resides with his dog Koa, a Pitbull-Great Dane mix.
