Suggestion Box

SUGGESTION. Is there anything we can do about the Family Dollar part of the parking lot? There is a garbage everywhere, including motor oil bottles and the dumpster area is filthy. It bothers me to drive into an environmentally friendly establishment and see garbage flying.

RESPONSE. We have repeatedly talked to their management, landlord, corporate office and the city. Feel free to call the city. Family Dollar has have been fined in the past.

S. Vegan cooking classes, please. Some of us need a lot of help!

R. We need more space.

S. Please have cheese artisans state how they treat their animals on the label (free roam, etc.).

R. OK, we’ll do that.

S. Please order clothes moth traps.

R. We’ve ordered more and they will be stocked soon.

S. What happened to the logo contest? I’m ready and waiting to vote.

R. It’s running behind schedule. Stand by for a vote around the end of the month.

S. I suggest more members become actively involved with the growth and expansion project of HWFC so we can get this show on the road.

R. We thank you for your interest. We suggest that you and any other interested members contact Lynne Lekakis about joining the Strategic Planning committee.

S. If we begin selling meat/fish/poultry, what will be the difference between the HWFC and Price Chopper or Hannaford? These coporations sell the same products as the Coop. Would the only difference be our cooperative structure? I became a member for more reasons than that!

R. There are more differences between HWFC and Hannaford and Price Chopper than our cooperative structure. We have a mission statement and a statement of conscience to guide us. The Coop in Niskayuna has a cooperative structure and sells many of the same products as PriceChopper and Hannaford. We have an emphasis on natural and organic products. We also support local and/or small-scale farms and businesses throughout our various departments. People who choose to eat meat and seek an alternative to corporate farming had the opportunity to vote in the October referendum (see results on Page 1), as did those who want to keep HWFC meat free.

S. Non-working members should be allowed to vote in the upcoming referendum on selling meat. This is a huge departure from the mission statement some of us became members for. My schedule as a teacher prohibits me from working at this point to gain voting membership. I am very concerned about opening the voting process on this referendum to include all stakeholders in the HWFC. A motion should be made by a Board member to amend the rules for this very unique referendum.

S. As a strict vegetarian, I am very concerned about some of the issues that may or may not have been discussed about the upcoming referendum:

• Will there be separate check-out lines?

• Will workers receive proper food handling training?

• Will workers stocking shelves sanitize their hands and materials before stocking non-meat items?

• What will be done to avoid the smell of fish, blood, spoiled products?

R. Your suggestions are being forwarded to the Board.

S. It would be great if you carried some grass-fed beef/lamb/turkey/chicken (humanely, naturally raised and processed) in a freezer section.

R. We held a referendum in October to decide this issue among the membership. In the meantime, please speak with Gustav or a Specialty Foods department worker.
