News at a Glanceby Nancy
Ellegate The HWFC
Board of Directors met on Tuesday, October 24. Minutes Minutes for
Board meetings will be available on the Co-op’s website shortly. The
procedure for
having these posted was described. Strategic
Planning The all-day
visioning event has been postponed. It was originally planned for late
October,
but there were too many scheduling conflicts. In addition, it would be
best to have
the event after input on the Co-op’s future is gathered at the November
membership dinner. Since the holiday season is the busiest time at the
Co-op,
it was decided to have the meeting after the new year, probably at the
end of
January or beginning of February. Nutrition It was
suggested that perhaps the Nutrition committee should reply to relevant
queries
on the suggestion board. The Operations and Administrative Coordinator
will
check with staff to see how this might be done. The Nutrition committee
and a
group of the staff will meet in the future to discuss possible
additional
labeling of products in the store. There was a discussion of issues
involved
with labeling. How much labeling should the Co-op do about various
issues? Should
there be labels on the shelves or should there simply be information
available at
the front of the store? One example to consider is non-organic soy
products, which
may contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs). It was noted that
there are
always trade-offs and it is important not to have absolute positions as
we
consider these issues. Finance The Finance
committee reported that the Co-op is in good shape financially. The
committee
is looking at the long-term costs of health insurance and benefits. At
the
moment, matters are fine in this regard, but we want to be prepared for
the
future. Many members of the Board reiterated their support for the
current
benefit package. Board
Issues Proposed
revisions to the standing rules of the Board were discussed. New
Co-ops Two new
co-ops are being opened by groups in Board-Governance
Committee Group The ad hoc
committee meeting on Board and- Governance committee relations and
responsibilities
is discussing a separate bylaws committee and asked for feedback from
the Board
on this. The Board felt this was a good direction to go in. Lobbying The Board
liaison to the Nutrition committee reported back on the lobbying issue:
That
is, does she need to register as a lobbyist when bringing issues before
elected
officials on behalf of the Co-op or another group she works with? She
has been
advised by the state lobbying authority and by attorneys that she does
not need
to register until $5,000 is expended on lobbying. Executive
Session The Board
met in executive session at the end of the meeting. Upcoming
Meetings The
November Board meeting was changed from Tuesday, November 28 to
Wednesday, November
29. Starting in
December, meetings are again scheduled for Tuesdays in the Community
Room at
the Co-op on: December 19, January 23 and February 27. Meetings begin
at 5:30
pm. As noted
above, meeting dates can change, so please check date, time and
location before
the meeting. |
