A Director's Chairby Howard Brent Do you recommend the Coop to people you meet? In the spring of 1978, I moved to Colonie from Yonkers. Almost at once I began my search for quality organic food. I must have asked over 60 people before someone told me about the Coop, which was then a small store on Quail Street. I joined in the fall - becoming member number 78. The store was small and poorly stocked, but I knew it could be much more. Needless to say, I started to tell everyone I met about the Coop. Some time later we purchased the Quail Street building for about $15,000 and became the landlord. Before long, we were breaking through a very thick brick/-stone/-con-crete/-wood and rubble wall to expand the Coop. We eventually occupied the entire building. The search began for larger quarters, which led us to the present store. Not only did many people plan the move, they also pitched-in to make it happen. A general manager was hired. A computer checkout system was installed, which allowed us to accept credit cards. This greatly increased our sales and cut down on the receipt of "rubber" checks. By the time you read this article, the members will have decided on the proposed reset/expansion of the store. Even if the vote is "no," our sales will continue to grow beyond the $5 million mark. How is this possible with so many local chains selling many of the same foods? I suspect that one cannot get, elsewhere, the information and help that our staff and member workers provide to shoppers. Kathleen, Bob, Gayle, Nancy, Eric, Barbara, Nate, Bill and Michael need only be asked for help at the Coop. When I shop at the Coop I am in "my" store, "my" community, visiting with people whom I know and like. That is why I recommend the Coop. I carry and distribute Coop business cards to almost everyone I meet. Do you recommend the Coop? |
