Community Gardens celebrates its 30th year with 30 gardening and cooking classes

by Sara Worden

Its our thirtieth year here at Capital District Community Gardens! We started in 1972 as a community service project by Garden Way, the now defunct manufacturer of Troy-Bilt lawn and garden equipment.

The organization was then incorporated as an independent nonprofit in 1975. CDCGs goals were then, and are today, to improve the daily lives of urbanites through a variety of city greening activities and by providing opportunities for residents to plant individual gardens. From these gardens, growers harvest fresh food, develop stronger bodies, enjoy outdoor recreation and cultivate a positive sense of accomplishment. For thirty years, CDCG has functioned as an advisor, advocate, planner, designer, developer and manager of gardens, green spaces and environmentally sound activities in the capital region. Over that time the organization has been housed in eight different offices, with space expanding to keep pace with broader programs and associated staff. We are currently located at 40 River Street in Troy and have 43 gardens located throughout the Capital District.

With all this growth we are now able to expand upon many of our programs and are excited to present a new series of classes on gardening and cooking from the garden. Our Know to Grow program has been greatly expanded for 2005 and, in celebration of our 30th, we will be facilitating more than 30 classes to be held in Albany, Schenectady and Troy from January thru November.

The Know to Grow series is a great way to stay inspired through the long winter months and get informed about gardening and healthy eating throughout the year. Examples of class topics include composting and vermiculture, preserving the harvest, soil secrets, and healthy cooking. All classes are open to the public and are offered free to CDCG community gardeners, and cost $10 for all others. Registration is required, so sign up today!
