Remembering George Saxton

by Nate Horwitz

Dr. George Saxton, a longtime member of the Honest Weight Community, died on Christmas day. He had suffered from Parkinson’s disease for several years. George was a very modest man. Although he was a physician, a teacher and a founding member of Physicians for Social Responsibility — for which he shared the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize — he never talked about his enormous accomplishments at the Coop. He very humbly went about the task of stocking our shelves when he worked here. He always seemed to get an unusually great amount of enjoyment from whatever he was doing, whether it was stocking, pricing or figuring out how to load labels in a price gun.

George was unable to work in the Coop for the last few years because of his illness, but he frequently came here with his wife, Anne, to eat lunch and to shop. He always seemed glad to be here, even toward the end of his life, when it was clearly difficult for him to get around.
