Troy Winter Farmers' Market: Supporting
local food & community
by Amy Braig-Lindstrom
After the close of a highly successful third season, the Troy Waterfront Farmers' Market is embarking on a unique winter farmers' market. With visitors to the summer market numbering more than 2,000 people on peak market days, farmers' market vendors and volunteers came together to organize and implement a weekly winter market.
The Troy Winter Farmers' Market, which opened
on November 30, attracts between 20 and 25 vendors and various
not-for-profit community tables each week. The indoor market takes place
every Saturday, from 10 am to 2 pm, through April in The Atrium-a
glass-walled building at 3rd Street and Broadway in downtown Troy. Free
covered parking is available at the Troy parking garage. For more info,
call 785-7054 or go online to www.troymarket.org
.
This producer-only market features winter vegetables (including baby spinach from Slack Hallow Farms), apples and cider from two orchards, natural meats and poultry from several farms, farm-fresh eggs (including Cornell Farms), several bakers (including Big Dipper Bakery), local cheeses (including Palantine Farms), maple and honey products, plus crafts, visual arts and more.
Volunteer market organizers are working to attract musicians, local chefs, community organization tables, and other special events.
As people continue to realize the benefits of supporting local food and farms, the Troy Waterfront Farmers' Market has experienced exceptional support from the Capital District community. Fortunately, this is part of a nationwide trend, as the number of farmers' markets has increased from 800 in the mid 1980s, to 3,100, today according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
If you would like to help or learn more, please contact Amy Braig-Lindstrom at 785-7054, or Donna Mullen at 793-2032. Volunteers are especially sought to assist at the market table.
