Q.After we open the new store and the deli and café are up and running, let’s consider delivering lunches locally.
A. Great idea! We’ll keep it mind.

Q.I think in the new building there should be a bigger playroom including stuffed animals. Why do you not allow stuffed animals any more? It was funner. (age 9)
A.
We can only keep toys that can be cleaned adequately to avoid spreading germs in the play area. Stuffed animals cannot be cleaned well enough to kill contagions.

Q.Please consider having wine and beer at the new location.
A.
Our new store plan will consider making available local microbrews. Wine sales would be problematic because of state laws.

Q.(1) Please try to get local firewood. Out-of-state wood can import pests and pathogens that can kill our trees! (2) Why does Honest Weight sell firewood from Virginia? Isn’t the fossil fuel for transport excessive?
A.
We lost our local supplier, so we brought this wood in with it’s easily handled bundles for customer’s convenience. If you know of a local wood supplier, please let us know.

Q.We need a Musicians Wanted/ Available section on board.
A. Musicians can list their musical offerings with “services,” and people seeking musicians can list with the “help wanted.” Also, musicians looking for work can post their cards with the other business cards.

Q.Many of us vegetarians are offended by people pushing dead flesh at the store. Meat is unethical, unhealthy and unsustainable agriculturally. Why does the Co-op push it like this?
A. The membership voted in October 2005 to sell local sustainably raised meat. Thank you for your opinion.

Q.This is an amazing and unique co-op. Good people, good hearts, good work!
A. Thank you very much.

Q.How often are the scoops for the bulk foods cleaned?
A. We do cleaning of scoops and bins on an ongoing basis.

Q.Please avoid taking space on the café tables for administration paperwork during peak use hours.
A. We are sorry. We cannot wait until we have a bigger space.

Q.Could you possibly carry Tofuliti Marry Me ice cream bars?
A. You may special order a case. Because they contain fructose, we cannot carry them.

Q.I was at the Co-op on Saturday 9/29 and found out about the member meeting that happened 9/28. Why weren’t we informed about the meeting? The reported that there was discussion. In this case, as sometimes in the past, we often have to come to the store in person to find out what is happening. For some of us that is not always possible (i.e., poor health, transportation problems, etc.). Please think broadly and inclusively of everyone with all needs.
A.
All members who are up to date on their share payments and work requirements are eligible to vote at meetings and are mailed a notice. Please check with Nate to ensure that your contact information is up to date.

Q. Annie’s-brand boxed pasta and cheese products have enough salt to kill a village. They really are inedible, and I like salt. Please consider discontinuing.
A. We support your decision to not buy Annie’s. Have you tried Simply Organic or Rising Moon brands?

Q.How about having the birds in the back be our mascots and friends?
A. We are doing our best to help the birds move peacefully along in accordance with health department regulations.

Q. Put measuring cups next to the bulk aisle items.
A.
Our standard flat scoops hold about one cup. We’ll try to keep a cup available. If you have any spares, please bring them in.

Q.How about an “online” Suggestion Box with answers?
A.
The Coop Scoop is online with answers.
Unfortunately, due to space limitations, we are unable to publish all suggestions. – EDITOR

Q.
I regularly buy organic tahini in bulk. It seems to be getting thinner. Please stir well so we don’t purchase mostly oil — it sould be more like a spread.
A. We stir the tahini before putting a new one out, and also stir it as needed. We can put a spatula in the bucket so shoppers can mix it up before they buy it. Please ask a bulk worker if you want them to stir it for you.

Q.Emergen-C is a product we should check into — the ingredients are questionable, glycine and salt especially.
A. We offer Emergen-C for people who wish to replinish their electrolytes. Sodium-restricted people should read their labels. This product has 60 mg of sodium (3% of the daily value), and glycine is essential for the synthesis of nucleic acids, bile acids and other nonessential amino acids in the body. Glycine is also necessary for central nervous system function and a healthy prostate.

Q.
The new Broccoli Slaw is a nice idea. But why is our own deli using cane juice (sugar) and yeast extract (MSG) — two common irritants for many people? Doesn’t the Nutrition committee educate anymore? Does the deli know these facts and care? I thought we were providing an alternative.
A.
Our new Broccoli Slaw is a healthier adaption of an old family recipe. It uses Fakin Bakon (which has cane juice and yeast extract) as a meat alternative. We’ll pass your suggestion on to the Nutrition committee.

Q.Could we get some bigger stickers? I try to put PLU and variety of flour so I can know which is which when I get home. Cashiers have trouble reading the small numbers.
A.
Larger stickers would cost us quite a bit more. Smaller stickers use less resources as well. Feel free to use two or more stickers to meet your labeling needs.

Q.For the new store — a slow lane for people with back problems (like me) and other things that slow people down.
A.
We find your idea intriguing and will keep it in mind. We encourage you to take your time and savor every moment of the HWFC experience.
