Clearing Out!

by Suzanne Fisher

Wayne Perry, owner of Sicap Industries LLC, used to have terrible headaches which would immobilize him. He had been working with his doctor for years to mitigate the effects of his allergies and headaches and he had tried all the different kinds of sinus and headache medications, both prescription and over-the counter. Nothing prevented the headaches and he worried about what would happen if he was afflicted with one while at work.

In 1996, Wayne’s career included giving demonstrations of how to use pepper spray as a self-defense mechanism. He appeared in front of various audiences and even on TV shows. Then one day it happened: Just as they were going live on the air, a headache began. He felt he had no choice but to continue on in spite of excruciating pain. In the demonstration, he would have someone spray him with the pepper spray. When they did he suddenly found that he could breathe and that his headache had dissipated.

Wayne realized that something in the pepper spray had helped his sinuses. He then began to experiment with various pepper-based substances including jalapeño pepper juice and hot sauce. His doctor confirmed that evidence supports the theory that the capsaicin found in pepper, is effective for sinus problems. Wayne knew that the natural substance oleoresin capsaicin was available industrially, so he tried putting a teaspoon of it in one gallon of water to use as a home-made nose spray. It was too strong. He eventually added rosemary extract and sea salt into the capsaicin mixture as a nose spray. He found this to be so effective for his sinus problems and headaches that he completely stopped using other medications. In 2003, he began bottling this solution in his kitchen and selling it on ebay. His doctor began suggesting it to other patients — and Sinus Buster was born.

Crossing the Blood-Brain Barrier

Wayne explains that what makes his product work so well is that the molecules of the capsaicin are able to cross the blood-brain barrier. The capsaicin is both an irritant and an anti-inflammatory. It first irritates then quickly moves into membranes to deplete the chemicals that are causing pain and inflammation.

The Sinus Buster formulas are different from other capsaicin products on the market because Wayne includes all five different kinds of capsicanoids that work with the capsaicin. His company uses some of the commercially available capsaicin, but also extracts their own capsicanoids from cayenne and habanero peppers. This combination of resins is so much more effective that pharmaceutical companies are interested in Sicap’s work. Sicap Industries currently has more than a dozen patents pending for the Sinus Buster base formula as a delivery agent, as well as a remedy.

Sicap Industries moved into their current site in Colonie in 2004. This 13,000 sq.ft. facility houses manufacturing, warehouse and office space, where eleven employees work full time. Sinus Buster products are registered with the FDA for over-the -counter sale as a homeopathic remedy. Small health food stores and co-ops were the first to carry Sinus Buster. Now it is becoming available in regular grocery stores, and the company is looking at growth in the near future.

Honest Weight is currently carrying the original metered dose formula of Sinus Buster. If you check their website (www.sinusbuster.com) you will see an array of products, from face wash to a weight loss infusion, in addition to their sinus products. Honest Weight’s HaBA department, already bursting at the seams, may offer other products in the future. But for now the original metered dose formula is all that there is room for.

A Fiery Trial

You may be wondering what Sinus Buster is like and if it really works. This writer decided to be a guinea pig in order to keep you well informed. Read on! First of all, please note that this tester is a person who has tried many nasal sprays and rinses, including over- the-counter chemical sprays, saline sprays, steroid-based long-term sprays, saline and plain water rinses with a neti pot. Of these, she found the most effective to be the chemical sprays which are known to be caustic and not advised by doctors, and which left an unhealthy burning in the sinuses as an after-effect.

Seated with tissue box in hand, the Sinus Buster was applied, and for about 10 seconds a fiery sensation filled the upper front of her head. Then her nose ran and she caught her breath and said a few choice words. After that, the air cleared and she could breathe. For the rest of the day, the feeling of itchy irritation, stuffiness or any other unpleasant sensation associated with cold and allergy was totally absent, with no side effects or injury. It worked!

Do Try This at Home

That said, there are a few recommendations I would make. Check out the website to see the benefits of the Sinus Buster formula. Their explanations are sound and more detailed than given here.

Don’t give this to your child or grandmother. You want your child to love you and you don’t want to give your grandmother a heart attack. Don’t apply mascara just before using. You will also want tissues close at hand. (Try not to blow your nose right away, though, because you do want to keep the spray inside.) Do try this in the privacy of your own home the first time before, say, taking it to work with you.

As a disclaimer, I must confess to you that I am not a physician, and cannot tell you that this is the remedy for you. My own experience has been very positive. I am glad to lose the need for a chemical spray, and am delighted to have a bottle of Sinus Buster parked on my bed stand. The initial trial was rather memorable, but well worth it. Happy New Year, fellow sinus sufferers!
