New on the Shelf

For Summer, and for All Seasons
Featuring Health and Body Aids

The Coop’s Health and Body Aids (HaBA) department, headed by Kathleen Boehning (a homeopath), regularly offers new products.

Especially for summer, there are a number of noteworthy products. Buzz Away Extreme insect repellant “repels mosquitoes, fleas, gnats, black flies, & now — TICKS.” Sunscreen (SPF 20) for Face and Body from Aubrey Organics comes in tinted or unscented formulas. For allergy relief, Hyland’s offers Seasonal Allergy Relief — “a homeopathic formula that may be of benefit to some allergy sufferers,” says Kathleen. AlerBlock+ by Arkopharma is a nasal spray that provides homeopathic allergy/hay fever relief. Finally, NutriBiotic Natural Body and Foot Powder makes a nice addition to the gym bag, as it contains grapefruit seed extract and tea tree oil — both antifungals.

Also new in HaBA are chemical-free, paraben-free homeopathic lotions: Psoriasis Lotion, Eczema Lotion, Post- Chemo/Radiation Lotion and Shingles Lotion, all from Sympathetical Formulas. For athletes and for those suffering from heart problems or chronic fatigue syndrome, ResveraCarn (Livingtonics) dietary supplement can be effective because it contains DRibose, LCarnitine and CoQ10: “These are the three main ingredients important for the production of energy, especially for the heart … it’s a fantastic product,” reports Kathleen.

For irritable bowel syndrome, IBx Soothing Bowel Formula (“Traditional Tibetan Formula”) from Natural Balance is available. For canker sores, Cankermelts offer natural pain relief and healing; the product, Kathleen notes, “contains licorice, which has antiviral abilities.” Another new nasal spray on the shelf (this one for dry environments) is Nasal Cool Mist Essential Oil Spray. For hair health and beauty, Aubrey Organics adds Ginseng Biotin Hair Gel to its Men’s Stock line.

In HaBA ingestibles, welcome Hempshake from Nutiva, an organic drink mix that’s rich in bioflavinoids found in red and blue fruits, and has a balance of omega-3, -6 and -9, reports Kathleen. New in packaged flaxseeds is Health from the Sun’s FiProFLAX: organic, cold-milled flaxseeds that contain fiber, protein, omega-3 fatty acids and lignans. Lastly, Kathleen says few customers may be aware that HaBA’s herbs and spices stock includes two mushroom and herb blends (Fiesta Blend and Mediterranean Blend, both organic) from FungusAmongus. Organic “Nubian Nectar” or Red Raspberry Rooibos loose teas can also be found in this section of the store.

Grocery
The Cold and The Cool

The Coop continues to increase the variety of vegan choices on the shelves: introducing Soyatoo Soy Whip, an organic soymilk product (from Germany) to be used “like a classic whipped cream with cakes, desserts, and fruit.”

A popular beverage can be found in the refrigerated section: GT’s organic, raw kombucha drinks.

Kombucha is a Chinese tea that yields various potent nutrients when cultured; the product maker notes that “all of these combine to create an elixir that immediately works with the body to restore balance and vitality.”

Blue Sky Natural Soda has been reformulated — it now contains no high-fructose corn syrup. R.W. Knudsen now offers spritzers in glass bottles, all made with 100% juice/no sugar, in a variety of flavors. Sanfaustino has added essences of lemon, mandarin orange, lime, or raspberry lime to its “Good Source of Calcium” Natural Mineral Water.

How about some salt to bring on the thirst? In instant/prepared foods, Simply Asia brings us a garlic black bean noodle/sauce boxed mix, while Simply Organic offers World of Taste pouched seasonings in various blends (Tomato Curry, Dolmades, Chipotle Mango Chicken, and others).

Finally, Sproutman’s Hemp Sprout Bag offers sprout-growers an alternative to the jar method; the bag “grows all grains and beans” and “won’t mold, mildew, or shrink.”
