Our New Board

With the election of five new Board members in April, Honest Weight proudly, and with great appreciation for their service, sends off two Board members who have completed their two terms with passion and dedication. As long-term HWFC members, Howard Brent  and George Broeckx have participated in nearly all major decisions made by the Co-op since our inception. As Board members over the past six years, they have helped the Co-op institute a Collective Management Team, develop and refine the role of the Governance committee, engage in HWFC’s first strategic plan, develop and refine our product manual, and set the parameters for our next big move. Their institutional memory and commitment to HWFC principles have helped the Board of Directors and the HWFC community maintain our integrity while experiencing enormous growth.

During his tenure, Howard Brent served as the voice of fiscal conservation, reminding the Board of Directors to think long-term and preserve the Co-op’s resources (in other words, he is one of the most frugal guys we know). Howard is a committed optimist and yet he wasn’t afraid to express his opinion even when he new his position would not be popular. He is a great storyteller and often repeated (and repeated) stories that demonstrated his point or reminded us of the history of HWFC. Like many of us at the Co-op, Howard loves food. He routinely volunteered to coordinate the ordering and delivery of food for Board meetings, membership meetings and special events.

George Broeckx was also not afraid to speak his mind, but he did so in moderation. (“Are you there, George?” we would often ask.) George would patiently (the man never complains) listen to the Board’s discussion and debate and then chime in with an opinion that often helped to bridge any differences or add the missing link. George was always posi- tive and committed to helping the Board ensure that the decisions made were in the best interest of HWFC.

HWFC welcomes our five newly (re)- elected Board members. Ray Ratte was re-elected for his second term. Lenore Gensburg and Jim Monsonis both served a previous term and took a year off before deciding to seek another term on the Board of Directors. Carolyn Maroney and Anna Dawson were elected to their first terms. Ongoing Board members include Louise Maher-Johnson, John Godfrey (Treasurer), Susan Weinrich (Vice-President), and Lynne Lekakis (President). Jim will serve as Secretary. It is not too early to begin considering whether you might have an interest in serving on the HWFC Board of Directors.
