Local Products in Cheese & Specialty Foods
Local
products of world class quality: What better combination could there
be? Gustav
enthusiastically informed this writer of a number of delectable local
products
we proudly carry.
From Cooperstown
comes Tanna’s Chutney in Garlic
& Ginger (extra spicy and regular), and the eagerly awaited Lemon
& Fig variety.
Those
familiar with the tarts from Dutch Desserts (Kinderhook) will
welcome
their chocolate tart, a rich delight made with chocolate purchased from
the
Coop.
Blue
Ledge Farm,
located
in the Champlain Valley of Vermont, brings us goat’s milk cheese: “made
in
small batches; grass-fed product; no hormones; no routine use of
antibiotics; a
product of sustainable agriculture.” Look for Lake’s Edge, Pepper
Chèvre and La Luna varieties. The farm’s
informational pamphlet
notes that each of their 75 goats has “her own name, and her own
distinct personality”;
a “clean and sweet-tasting milk” is produced.
We also
welcome the return of Lazy Lady Farm’s goat’s milk artisinal
cheeses out
of Westfield (Vt.). As noted in a feature in the Albany Times Union, this farm’s cheeses
“are
gaining attention in culinary circles” and have “gourmet shops in Boston and Manhattan
eager for their product.” Sprout Creek Farm in Poughkeepsie
offers four cow’s milk cheeses
“made using original recipes and traditional methods”: Ouray (“buttery
…
sweet”); Toussant (“piquant”); Barat (“nutty … grates
well”); and
Tuscan Style Ricotta (“3rd place winner in the American
Cheese Society Contest”).
Gustav
informs us that goat cheese is seasonal (April–December), since mother
goats’
milk feeds their young from late December through March. Certainly,
Coop
shoppers can also expect wonderful local produce to be appearing more
often on
our shelves and in our coolers as summer unfolds. Our attentive produce
staff always
make a point of noting a product’s origin on their signs: One example
is hydropanic
basil from Shushan (N.Y.).
Gluten-Free
Choices in Grocery
Glutino brings us wheat-free,
glutenfree pretzels (a product of Israel) in a 14-oz. “family
pack”
size. The same company offers gluten-free, wheat-free, egg-free Vanilla
Dreams sandwich cookies (made in Germany). A cheese
alternative
containing no preservatives, gluten, cholesterol or soy comes in Almond
Mozzarella Style, Almond Cheddar Style and RiceCheeze Cheddar Style
(Lisanatti). Each is “produced without using biotechnology” and
“shreds, melts
and tastes great!” Country Choice has added more cookies to
their
product line. Vanilla Wafers and Ginger Snaps, both
organic, do
contain wheat, egg and soy. Organic sugar is the first ingredient in
chocolate-flavored
syrup and caramel flavored syrup from Santa Cruz Organic (“delicious
on
ice cream, fruit, and special desserts”). Soymilk from Vitasoy comes
in
Original and Vanilla and is fortified with calcium and fiber. Made with
organic
soybeans, it boasts a “low fat content and low glycemic index.”
