News at a Glanceby Nancy
Ellegate The HWFC
Board of Directors met on Wednesday, April 26. Referenda
Rules The Governance
committee’s proposed rules for conducting referenda were discussed.
Some of the
concerns noted were that a referendum should not be the first way a
member
brings an issue forward; issues should be made known and discussed with
the
Board or membership before a referendum is considered. However, it was
felt
that once a referendum petition is submitted, negotiation is over and
the
referendum should proceed in a timely fashion. The number
of signatures needed to call a referendum was discussed; the 35
required
signatures is relatively small, given our current membership — only
about 5–6%
— so maybe the number should be higher. Another
concern was that guidelines should indicate that referenda can have
multiple
responses to a question, not just Yes or No. Arbitration A member
working on a process for personnel arbitration reported on his work. It
was
noted that arbitration should not be used for minor grievances and that
we
should reduce the number of steps in arbitration. Detailed, formal
recommendations will be forthcoming. Site
Issues The Board
discussed various possibilities regarding the redesign of the current
store and
for the proposed second site in Latham. Finance The Finance
committee has been reviewing the staff’s financial projections
regarding a
possible second store in Latham. They will continue reviewing these
scenarios
as more information becomes available. Product
Supply The
Alternative Supply committee has been dissolved, but these issues are
now being
dealt with by the Collective Management Team. Executive
Session The Board
met in executive session at the end of the meeting. Minutes Minutes of
all meetings are available at the Coop. Minutes of the most recent
meeting are
posted on the bulletin board. Upcoming
