Worker Profile: Deb Eyrne
by
Christy Articola
Deb
Eyrne has
been a
member of Honest Weight for about twenty years now. She first became a
member
in the mid-1980s for a very simple reason — because she and her family
love
eating whole foods, and she knew the Coop was the place to find them.
Deb has
been a member worker the entire time she’s been a part of the Coop, and
she has
always worked on Friday nights. Over the years, she has worked in a
variety of
departments. At the old Quail
Street location, she worked as sort of a
floating manager.
“I was sort of the interim store manager of the moment there,” she
explains. On
Friday nights, when the other store managers left, she would fill in
wherever
necessary. After Honest Weight moved to its current location, Deb
worked at the
service desk and as a cashier for many years before settling into her
present
position of running the bulk department on Friday nights, a position
she has
held for the last five years. In that position, she serves as a general
purpose
stocker. “If something needs to be done, I do it,” she says. “I fill in
the
holes!” One of the reasons she enjoys working in the bulk department is
that
she feels that all the bending and stretching is good exercise. She
also likes
the fact that she is able to have some mother-daughter time with her
daughter,
Jessica, who joins her each week, while doing her own member hours in
the
department as well.
Deb lives
in Renssalaer County
on the outskirts of East Greenbush
with her
husband, Glen. The couple have four grown children: Matthew, 29, and
Katie, 27,
both of whom live in California
now; and Jessica, 22, and Steve, 20, who still live locally. When not
at Honest
Weight, Deb works for in contract management for the state Department
of
Transportation. In her free time, which she admits is rare, she loves
to travel
— particularly to the maritime region of Canada and to the U.S.
Southwest.
When
asked about her favorite products sold at Honest Weight, Deb hesitates,
because
there are so many. But she is quick to rave about three departments in
particular — our cheese department, our produce department and our wide
variety
of fantastic snack foods. Her favorite thing about being a part of the
Coop,
though, is simple. She says, “It’s a place where I can go where I know
what the
product is — I’m never concerned that they are hiding anything from the
customers!”
