Honest Weight partners with community organizations to launch...

Green Scene '07

by Karisa Centanni, HWFC Education Coordinator, and Jodi Smits Anderson, Collins + Scoville Architects

The Co-op is co-sponsoring several programs throughout the summer at the Albany Public Library and other Capital Region sites that will emphasize green living, building and being.

June 19 • 7–9 pm, Albany Public Library, 161 Washington Ave. Jodi Smits Anderson of Collins + Scoville Architects and a LEED-certified architect presents “Being Green 101,” the first of several public education forums on living and building green. And…

July 17 • 7–9 pm, Albany Public Library, 161 Washington Ave. Dan Gibson of Home Energy Advisors LLC will present “Reducing Our Footprint: Living a Low-Carbon Life,” a discussion on making sense of and calculating your Carbon Footprint, and how to take action to change it. And…

September 15 • Green Material Expo (GME), in the Atrium, downtown Troy. Vendors, educational sessions and break times to encourage networking and vendor booth visits all come together in this second annual event. The Committee on the Environment (COTE) intends to include a keynote address either at lunch or to kick-off the day. Suggestions are welcome for speakers you would like to hear and see (send suggestions to admin@aiaeny.org).

But wait — there’s more! For the full week prior to the GME, September 8– 15, we are coordinating “Green Scene ’07.” We are encouraging local groups and businesses, such as the RPI School of Architecture, Marketblock Books, Discovery Hall, Simple Living, the Farmer’s Market, the Albany Public Library and Honest Weight Food Co-op to each host several sustainable-related events during this week. COTE will be the overall coordinator and will produce a Green Scene Guide to the scheduled events. Send along ideas for speakers, books, films, crafts, buildings or tips you would like explored during this week. If you know a local group that has a stake in “green” that would like to take part, please send their contact info along as well, to admin@aiaeny.org.

And wait — here’s even more! To wrap up “Green Scene ’07,” we plan to host the first annual Re-Place Design Competition awards to be given on the evening of September 15. Anyone of any age can submit an entry to this design competition. The “Place” can be outdoors or indoors, in a tree, under a rock — wherever you would want to be. The format of submissions is also wide open: send in crayon sketches, photographs of re-places you have built, a poem about the perfect re-place, a shadowbox using bits of the materials you plan to use in your re-place, or complete construction drawings and cost estimate package so your perfect re-place can be built.

There are, however, a few very simple parameters to follow: The re-place must be made (or intended to be made) of either found/salvaged/re-used materials, locally produced materials, or healthy materials or any combination of these three goals. The submission must reference the materials, why they were chosen and how they influenced your design. You may submit independently or in a team and there is no limit as to who can help or participate, so long as you list all the participants in the entry documentation. So kids should get their teachers, parents and friends involved. The Co-op will coordinate a few summer Saturdays that help groups already started, or just beginning to think about, projects to take them to the next level. We hope the results will turn into a published book about design and materials and how kids can make places that are creative, inspiring, healthy, practical, fantastic and fun.

But wait – that’s not all! You might understand from reading this article that AIA ENY COTE* wants to invigorate the community in the Capital Region into learning about and being more sustainable in all that we do. You’re right.

Our goal as a committee is to “educate and inspire the community.” Toward that end, we look to you for input on what does truly educate and inspire you … and entertain you to boot. Please send along ideas or comments via e-mail to jsmitsanderson@csarchpc.com or to COTE, c/o admin@aiaeny.org.

Okay — that’s all (for now).
