New and LOCAL on the

Being a locavore has become
easier at the Honest Weight Food Co-op. This month, we highlight some
new locally grown or locally produced foods to tempt your palate.
Mu Mu Muesli, from Sharon Springs, has received quite a lot of notice
lately. The cereals, which are packaged in a 100% biodegradable bag
with a cornbased liner, have no added sugar. With cranberries, raisins,
organic dates, organic unsulphured, unsweetened coconut, roasted
almonds and flaxseeds, the cereals are naturally sweet.
In our specialty item section, try some R&G cheese--made in Cohoes,
with milk from Ballston Spa. The chevre (goat cheese) comes in three
flavors: plain, maple/chipotle, and garlic/herb. For something more
sophisticated, look for Eclipse, R&G's ash-ripened goat cheese;
it's aged, yet creamy, and goes well with chilled chardonnay. The
company also manufactures a line of goat milk Greek yogurt, in plain
and strawberry.
It's hard to imagine anyone being more local than our illustrious
"Cannoli Lady," Adele, of Cucina Adele. Made less than two miles from
the Co-op, her new exclusive line of pasta cooks almost instantly and
according to our specialty item manager, Gustav, it "melts like silk in
your mouth." Available in orecchiette, linguine, and fettuccine.
In our dairy department, we now have yogurts and yogurt smoothies from
Maple Hill Creamery of Little Falls. Made of milk produced by 100%
grass-fed cows, it's available in wild blueberry, orange crème,
lemon, maple, and plain. Located in nearby Shaftsbury (Vt.), Polymeadow
Farm & Creamery is now offering plain goat milk yogurt, goat milk,
goat-milk maple smoothie, and chocolate- flavored goat milk. Another
fine new dairy offering goat milk to our customers is Kortright
Creek. Their yogurt, produced in East Meredith, is available in
raspberry, maple, and plain.
New local items in our bulk section include black walnuts in the shell.
These are available for a limited time, so stock up now! From the
Finger Lakes region, Farmer Ground Flour now offers a special blend of
50/50 whole wheat/white flour for bread baking. Aegean Delights,
located in Delmar, are now making candied orange peel available to the
Co-op. Use these for baking or (for the more adventurous among us) for
candy. Dark chocolate-covered pretzels, from Baker's Daughter, is
another local treat at the Co-op.
For the omnivorous locavore, the Co-op has also just started to carry
pasture-raised chicken stock, in frozen 32 oz. containers, from the
Garden of Spices in Greenwich; all natural, no-nitrate beef jerky from
Grazin' Angus, made from grass-fed beef raised in Ghent; as well as
Wise Organic certified kosher and organic chickens from just over the
Pennsylvania border in Scranton. The last item is delivered fresh every
Thursday, available as whole chickens, 8-piece cut up, wings, and
thighs. Just remember--it's easy to eat local at the Honest Weight Food
Co-op!
