Q. Please resume taking
dead batteries for recycling. It really was an important public service.
A. Our recycler made the requirement too difficult to meet. We have
been looking for an alternative and will continue to do so.
Q. Is it possible to get a liquor license to sell organic wine, Holly
Bollinger?
A. We cannot sell wine in our store, per NYS law.
Q. Not terribly comfortable café chairs.
A. We're saving our funds for the new store.
Q. The Fresh Market is coming to Latham. How will you compete?
A. With knowledge of the local market and a non corporate agenda.
Competition will make us stronger.
Q. (1) Vote by proxy through the Internet. (2) Blog on the website for
open discussion of issues. (3) Provide info on the website about people
running for membership on the Board.
A. (1) Proxy voting is currently not permitted. Please speak to a Board
member. (2) We eliminated our blog with open submissions due to excess
spam. (3) We plan to post information for members who declare their
candidacy prior to the meeting.
Q. Wherefore art thou cherry or grape tomatoes?
A. The freezing weather in Florida has affected the crop of cherry and
grape tomatoes. We will bring them in when they become available and
affordable.
Q. We should plan a summer picnic for staff and members of HWFC.
A. Would you like to work on organizing this worthwhile endeavor? We
will pass your suggestion on to the Membership committee.
Q. It looks to me like you carry a lot of milk cartons that contain
out-of-state milk. Please buy NYS milk only. There are issues with
organic companies transporting milk, sometimes from the West Coast. The
problem is the fuel used for shipping. Plus, some large organic milk
farms raise cows in non-sustainable environment like Arizona. Upstate
NY's environment is sustainable for milk production.
A. We agree that consumers should buy products from local sources.
Large producers such as Dean and Horizon do use non-sustainable
production methods. This is why we carry Organic Valley's regional
distribution network. Organic Valley requires pasturing the herd.
Meadowbrook is a local farm, and we have carried their milk since the
'80s. Maple Hill is from Little Falls (N.Y.). If you know of any other
local options, please let us know.
Q. Please observe the interesting new "Sugar Reduction Yacon Tea"
boxes. I had a hard time finding a box without a price sticker in the
middle of the densest information end of the package. Please train and
remind workers to be strategic, thoughtful and considerate of shoppers
when placing labels. Do you see a few open spaces where the sticker
could go? Thanks for taking a stand--pay-off down the road for
label-reading member shoppers.
A. Thanks for the information. We will continue to remind our stockers
to be mindful when placing stickers.
