From the Groceryby Erik Anderson What’s for breakfast? The new breakfast products this month bring both good and bad news; the good news is they all appear to be delicious, and the bad news is you can only respectively eat one of them at a time. Dr. Oetker brings to us three types of pancake/waffle mixes this month: Original, Apple Cinnamon, and Chocolate Chip—all of which are (and this probably goes without saying) certified organic. And if there’s a mad breakfast scientist within you, you could concoct the monster mix of chocolate chip apple cinnamon pancakes. However, I warn you once the mix has been made, there is no turning back. Another breakfast delight vying for your mouth is Peace Cereal’s three new varieties. They are Puffed Harvest, Hearty Raisin Bran, and Essential 10. Of the three, Essential 10 has my stomach with its coaxing of 10 grams of fiber, bran flakes, and multigrain clusters. Interesting enough, each reverse-side of the box tells a unique story of people who have make a difference in their world. My favorite is of the many-times-jailed grandmother who led protests for peace, earning her the moniker "Grandmother for Peace" along with, but of less note, "Greatest Grandmother in the World." Last, but not least, of the breakfast foods is the Canadian Multifoods’ Red River Cereal. It offers the simplicity and natural quality that the old-time prospectors of the West would have enjoyed. However, just by looks, it’s no trailblazer. If you are one who needs a good mental blaze of caffeine and spice in the morning, then Yogi Tea has a new line of chai spice teas. They are Green Chai, Black Chai, and Rooibos Chai. What I love most about Yogi Tea is the little words of wisdom at the end of every tea bag string—for example, "Wisdom and faith can remove all obstacles and bestow both worldly and spiritual success and happiness" (much better than my morning mantra, "Why did I bother waking up today?"). However, if you have already reached satori, and need not bother seeking eternal wisdom, then one or all of Honest Tea’s new flavors might be for you. They include such tongue twisting and tempting flavors as Haarlem Honeybush, Assam Black, and Moroccan Mint Green. They all contain a variety of herbal exotics from around the globe. With all that tea in your system, you won’t have any trouble in going straight to the shelf to try Organic Go Go Grahams from Barbara’s Bakery. They come in the varieties of chocolate, cinnamon, honey, and lemon-ginger—a taste so good that it may leave you with a stutter, as well. Is there food after breakfast? You may have eaten at a soul kitchen, but have you eaten at a Thai Kitchen? If not, then let me say that the soup there is instant, and comes in the choice of Lemongrass and Chili, Garden Vegetable, Bangkok Curry, and Chai Ginger and Vegetable. And each of these delights is only three minutes away. Thai Kitchen is also offering "Thailand’s most famous condiment," Peanut Satay Sauce. I have never tried it, but like any honest American I am allured by its fame. Maybe I can get my picture taken with it? But it’s time to get serious, folks—for it’s time to talk about tomato products, and other tomato-related issues. The R.W. Knudsen family has renewed their membership at the Coop with their Organic Tomato Juice, which is now, after the family’s haitus, a more healthy and less dysfunctional family product. Also new in the tomato product world is Bionaturae’s Organic Diced Tomatoes from Tuscany. Discover the Old World with this new product. And from not too far from Tuscany comes Colavita Extra Virgin Olive Oil. You won’t have any trouble tasting the vita in this organic olive oil. Another product of purity, new to the Coop is Lakewood’s Organic Pure White Grape Juice. It consists of 100% juice, not tempted by any corrupting impurities. And finally, for all you dogs out there, two new snack treats have arrived at the Coop. Waggers is offering Peanutbutter Roundies, made from all natural and organic ingredients, just the way you like it. And to all you Ol’ Yellers out there, your cries of pain were heard. The Coop now carries hip-and-joint ailment jerky treats. Ark Naturals is offering Sea "Mobility" Beef Jerky, an all-natural meat product that both "supports hip and joint health," and almost makes the canine Top Dog over the cow in the Great Circle of Life. |
