Organic Agriculture in CUBA:
New York farmers present their observations

On Wednesday, April 2 in Channing Hall at the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Albany, the Regional Farm & Food Project will host an evening on "Organic Agriculture in Cuba." Since the early 1990s, Cuba has been developing a national program of agriculture that emphasizes a more sustainable relationship between people, their food, and the land. Methods such as the use of entomopathogens-insect diseases used for biological control-vermicomposting, and the use of draft animals in place of fuel-inefficient machines, are examples of this successful implementation of alternative agricultural methods.

The program begins at 6 pm with a potluck dinner. Rice and beans will be provided. Please bring a dish to pass, preferably of local foods. At 7 pm, Richard Triumpho and Karl North-two New York state farmers-will share their experiences from visits to Cuba during which they were afforded first-hand looks at the uses of low-input and alternative strategies of agriculture. Their presentations will be followed by a discussion on how we, in our region, can begin to apply lessons from the Cuban experience to our local food and farming systems.

The evening is free and open to all. Channing Hall is located at 405 Washington Avenue, at Robin Street, Albany. Call Brandon Shimoda or Eric Winders at RFFP (518-427-6537) for more info or to RSVP (appreciated, though not required).
