HWFC annual membership meeting and Board elections set for Sunday, April 13

FEDCO seed orders are out. It can only mean one thing-spring will come, daffodils will bloom, and Honest Weight Food Coop will have its annual election for the Board in April. For all of you likely candidates who were all booked up in the fall, it is time now to clear your calendars and give something back to your coop.

For all the light heartedness of this announcement (laced with momma-style guilt), this is an earnest request for members deeply committed to the ideals of cooperative effort to come forward. There will be four seats up for election. Two years remain in the term vacated by Elmer Bertsch, and the other three positions will be full three-year terms. Craig Willis, David Seaman and Kinga Zalavary were elected in September to fill out the last few remaining months of vacated terms, and are now deciding if they will choose to run again.

Serving on the Board is hard work. There is no denying it. But the work has tremendous importance for the future of your store. Under cooperative principles and by law in New York, coops are a unique form of business operating under the leadership of directors elected by members from among their members. It is an opportunity for businesses to operate outside the norm, in fully conscious ways in the service of special values determined by its members, and also to serve as a viable business model.

There is a great deal of important work going on with the Board now. Day-to-day operation of the store has been turned over to a collective management team of department managers. The Board is collaborating closely with the team in putting this into place.

At the same time, the Board is working with the membership in developing a consensus about who we are, what our goals are, and the direction we'd like to see the store move in. This means expanding communication, increasing member involvement, and celebrating more.

Are you excited by the possibilities? Anyone who is up-to-date on shares and work hours may run for the Board. We would prefer members who have been in the Coop a few years and those who enjoy working with a variety of people. The job requires at least 20 hours per month, and likely more this year. Board meetings are every third or fourth Wednesday evening, and attendance is required. There are in-between meetings and committees, as well. The Board uses consensus decision making.

Please call Ginny McEwen (263-8904), or any Board member listed in the Coop Scoop , if you have questions. Candidate application forms are available at the service desk.
