News at a Glanceby Nancy Ellegate
The HWFC Board of Directors met on Wednesday, January 26.
Living Wage
The Board added to the minutes of that meeting a statement that $12,000 was approved as a living wage adjustment for all staff. This money will not be expended until the Collective Management Team (CMT) has worked out a plan for its distribution that is approved by the Board.
Governance
A member of the Governance committee addressed a query from the Board about reducing the number of required membership meetings. The committee feels these meetings are very important to keep Coop members coming together as a community. It was agreed to continue with the four annual meetings.
There has been a suggestion that the Coop compensate the Board president $1,250 for service above and beyond that expected. A petition supporting this plan had been signed by a number of members attending the January membership meeting. It was decided that this request would be put on the agenda for Annual Membership Meeting in April. The Governance committee noted the importance of having a policy in place for such cases.
Membership
It was decided that Coop members should receive two hours work credit for attending membership meetings.
Building
Work on the Health and Beauty Aids backstock room has been progressing and it should be in use shortly.
Coop Hours
Saturday hours have been extended to 8 pm.
Site Selection
The Times Union article indicating that the Coop is considering a new site in the Mansion neighborhood generated several new leads. A visit to one possible new building was planned.
Community Room
It was requested that there be a written procedure for scheduling events and meetings in the Community Room that can be given to members. A staff member will write one up. Other issues touched on were responsibility for keeping the room clean and priorities for use of the room.
Finance
The year-end financial report for 2004 is being prepared.
Committees
The Special Events committee has not met in many months, and it was decided to disband this committee.
Shares
Front end staff are now requiring that shareholders use their own member cards to shop. The Board will check with staff on how this is working out, and will ask for any further suggestions to ensure that people receiving a household discount own a share.
Board Recruitment
Board members were encouraged to recruit candidates to run for the Board at the Annual Membership Meeting.
Minutes
Minutes of all meetings are available at the Coop. Minutes of the most recent meeting are posted on the bulletin board.
Upcoming Meetings
The final meeting of the current Board is planned for Wednesday, March 23. Meetings are held at the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Albany, Channing Hall, 405 Washington Avenue at 6:15 pm. The first meeting after elections at the Annual Membership Meeting is planned for Wednesday, April 27. Anyone planning to attend a Board meeting should confirm date, time and location. (Note: This is particularly important for the April meeting. In the past, meeting times have sometimes been adjusted after the election of new Board members to accommodate their schedules.)
