Cheeses & Specialty Foods

“Descubre los quesos de España”: Discover the cheeses of Spain. Gustav (“curator” of this department) continues to move toward his goal of offering all of Spain’s cheeses here at the Coop. Two vividly contrasting cow’s-milk cheeses from Spain are now in the case: Queso Tetilla (“subtle, milky and creamy;” shaped, as it happens, like a Hershey’s “kiss”) and Queso Cabrales (“intense,” raw milk bleu cheese).

From The Girl & The Fig (California) comes Red Onion Confit; Apricot Fig Chutney; Fig Balsamic Vinegar; and Black Mission Fig Syrup. (Note: Some of these products contain alcohol.) Hot Pepper Jelly and Ginger Pepper Jelly — both made with the Scotch Bonnet Pepper — come from Busha Browne’s of Jamaica.

Our culinary travels then take us to Greece: Greek Honey in Heather, Pine, Chestnut, and Fir of Vytina varieties (all of which are “free from pesticides and collected by hand”) can be found near the chocolate section. Fans of Dagoba Chocolate will welcome three dark chocolate bars new to this line: Pacuare (“mild with low acidity,” from Costa Rica); Los Rios (“upfront cacao, bouquet of fruit blossom” from Ecuador); and Milagros (Fair Trade Certified from Peru, with “nuances of bananas, papaya and orchids”). Also in chocolate are dark and milk bars by Valrhona (France). Cacao Nibs — “ready to eat and mostly free of husk” — from Stone & Giacomotto are now available in the Bulk department.

Grocery

Kettle Chips has two new flavors of potato chips: Spicy Thai and Cheddar Beer, both voted for online by consumers (see crave.kettlefoods. com). Also new to this line are Aged White Cheddar, Hickory Honey Barbeque and Lightly Salted “Bakes” — “baked not fried” (lower fat) potato chips.

Fans of Annie’s Naturals salad dressings will notice three new flavors: Artichoke Parmesan, Lemon & Chive (both vinegar free) and Woodstock Dressing.

Gluten free, wheat free, yeast free bread sticks by Chebe Bread Products (Vermont) can be found in frozen foods.

We have two new loose teas from Divini Tea in the bulk tea/herb area. There’s the incredibly fragrant Raspberry Rooibos, which comes from South Africa and is caffeine free, and Honeybush, which comes from the same part of the world.

Lastly, a beverage made with mushrooms: Green Mountain Mycosystems of Vermont brings us VTea Vermont Maple Lemon Reishi. Its ingredients are filtered water, Vermont organic maple syrup, organic lemon juice, and Vermont Reishi, a member of the mushroom family that boasts medicinal uses (consumers are directed to the company website).
