Making Dog Biscuits
from the Bulk Aisle
|
by Lisa Vines
|
Pet owners interested in
saving some money and providing-- baking-- organic treats for their
pets should consider shopping in the Bulk aisle. For the accompanying
recipe, all items but milk were available in Bulk.
What about homemade dog biscuits? Think of this project as an alternate
shape cookie recipe. The ingredients are a little different, as are the
directions for baking: slower. A boneshaped cookie cutter (available at
larger craft stores) would be classy; but why limit oneself? We’ve got
squirrel, cat, and duck cookie cutter shapes, but dogs might not
notice. Perhaps a cookie cutter isn’t even necessary: just roll out the
dough and cut it into rectangles. For gift giving events, however, one
might make the extra effort to create interesting shapes.
One note of caution: some human foods are dangerous for pets. Xylitol,
for example, is lethal for dogs.

Wheat-free,
Corn-free, Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits
|
Ingredients:
3 cups barley flour
½ cup oatmeal
1 TBS oat bran
2 tsp baking powder
1½ cups milk
1½ TBS blackstrap molasses
1¼ peanut butter
Preheat the oven to 300°F. Mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl.
Mix the wet ingredients in another bowl and add to the dry ingredients.
Mix well. Roll dough to ¼" thick for smaller biscuits, ½"
for larger (3"). Cut into shapes with the cookie butters. Bake for
45–69 minutes for larger shapes until they are lightly browned; smaller
biscuits will bake faster. Turn off the oven and let the biscuits
finish drying overnight.
They should be crisp and firm.
Many thanks to Christine for her suggestions and recipe!
