Richard Hughes
|
| by Nate Horwitz |
Richard Hughes, a member of
the Honest Weight Food Co-op for over ten years, died unexpectedly on
Monday, January 26. He was 65.
Although Richard was a member for more than a decade, he never worked
in the store because of his severe arthritis. All the Co-op work in his
family was done by his wife Doreen, to whom he was married for over
forty years. Richard is survived by Doreen, his daughter Christine, and
his son-in-law Benny.
Although Richard never worked in the store, he was well known to most
of us who worked here, as he shopped here frequently. Richard had
strong--and varied--opinions about many issues. He was very concerned
with animal rights, and was an avid supporter of both PETA and Farm
Sanctuary. He also was a fan of Ronald Reagan, describing him as a
"great man." He had strong feelings about music, which he felt reached
an artistic peak in 1967 but had gone downhill steadily since then. He
was also a big fan of the New York Yankees, and was rarely seen without
his Yankees cap.
Richard’s opinions about Honest Weight were just as strong as his
opinions about everything else. He was a one-man campaign for keeping
the store open later in the evening, famously describing an hours
extension to 9 pm as "a no-brainer." And he was excited about Honest
Weight’s upcoming move to Watervliet Avenue--right around the block
from his house. We’re all very sorry that Richard didn’t live long
enough to see the Co-op move or stay open later.
That’s where I was going to end this obituary, but I think I need to
add in one last item. Richard was probably the biggest fan of my
writing that I’ve ever had. I’ve written dozens of articles for the
Coop Scoop going back many years, and very few people ever commented on
them to me. But Richard always did, and he always wanted to know when I
would finally get around to writing something else. In the last few
years I’ve farmed out much of the writing that I used to do, including
obituaries, but it just didn’t seem right to do that with Richard’s.
This one’s for you, Richard.
