Debbie Hamilton, a longtime
shopper at and member of the Honest Weight Food Co-op, died on Monday,
January 12. She was 56.
Debbie mostly did administrative work for the Co-op, and was known to
many Co-op members as a voice on the telephone. She worked on calling
people to find out their correct addresses and emails, and Debbie
spearheaded the project that explored why members stop working.
Over the summer Debbie became a much more visible presence at the Coop,
as she worked over 25 hours during our very successful membership
drive. Debbie personally signed up and oriented dozens of new members
during this drive. She continued orienting new members after the drive,
and that was to have been Debbie’s Co-op job for the future.
Unfortunately, because of the weather, some surgery that she had, and
her untimely death, Debbie didn’t get to orient as many new members as
she hoped she would.
Responsible until the end, in the last week of her life, Debbie mailed
the Co-op a packet of work that she hadn’t yet completed along with
some notes about what she had done and what still needed to be done.
Outside of the Co-op, Debbie was an assistant dean of students at RPI
and the director of disability services there. Previously, she had been
the director of the Capital District Center for Independence. She will
be greatly missed.
