Regional Food Bank reaches out to alleviate hungerby Susan D. Fisk For more than 900 agencies in 23 counties, the work of the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York is critical. Since 1982, it has been the "grocery store" for soup kitchens, food pantries, emergency shelters, senior programs and day care centers. It distributes 18 million pounds of food annually. Requests for food continue to climb while the food industry increases its generous contributions. Currently, more than 250 local and national companies donate food. The Regional Food Bank also receives products from national corporations through American's Second Harvest. The Regional Food Bank has run out of warehouse space, and has launched a $3 million capital campaign to increase refrigerated space by 500 percent and dry storage space by 50 per-cent, to automate packing operations, to add seven new loading docks, to replace aging vehicles, and to upgrade equipment. When renovations are completed this summer, the Regional Food Bank will be able to accept and distribute 50 percent more food annually.
