News at a GlanceThe HWFC Board of Directors met on Wednesday, September 25. Board Issues This was the first meeting of the Board after the special Board election in September. A Board training session was scheduled for early October. Permanent officers of the Board were to be elected and committee liaisons named at the October meeting. Currently, Board meetings begin at 7 pm. It was requested that meetings begin an hour earlier, at 6 pm. This was to be discussed in October. [Note: Meeting times have been changed to 6:30 pm, as of November.] It was announced that Marjorie Knetchel has resigned from the Board. Coop Manager Search Committee It was asked whether the names of the five final candidates for the position willbe made public. After discussion, a motion was passed stating that the Board would reveal the names of the five final candidates with the permission of each individual candidate. The committee will discuss the process for the candidates to talk to the staff, and whether or not there will be a forum for members as well. After discussion, a motion was passed stating that the three most appropriate candidates will be interviewed by the entire Board. The Board requested that the Search committee bring a written timeline and description of their process to the Board for review. Currently, there is only one staff member on the Search committee. The Board asked that the staff choose an additional member for this committee at their next all-staff meeting. Alternative Management Structure The staff representative reported that, after a Board member attending the September department heads' meeting conveyed that the Board was going ahead with a single-management position, the staff felt discouraged from holding an alternative management structure meeting. The Board member responded that the intent had not been to discourage staff input. The Board member merely meant to note that the Board was moving ahead with a single position and was not considering multi-position structures. There was a lengthy discussion of this situation. A motion was made to rescind the decision that selected a single-Coop-manager structure, and to resume dialog with the staff regarding an alternative management structure. After discussion, this motion was defeated. The Board member who attended the previous meeting was to attend the all-staff meeting in late September to clarify the Board's position and encourage dialog. The acting president of the Board also planned to attend at least part of the meeting, to the extent possible. Member Dinner The Membership committee is planning a nembership dinner, but is having trouble finding an affordable location that can accommodate 400 people. Interim General Manager's Report The Interim General Manager reported that estimates are being taken for a dropped ceiling and for moving the bulk and cheeses coolers. One of the staff will be attending the Let's Soar conference on expanding coop membership. The company that installed the scanner system was supposed to have come to address problems, but cancelled. The issues of offering health-related activities at the Coop, liability, and whether member hours should be offered for this were raised and referred to the Membership committee. Accountant's Report The Coop's accountant reported that work had begun on the 2003 budget. Donation Policy It was moved that the Board discuss the donation policy at the next meeting. Executive Session The Board met in executive session at the end of the meeting. Minutes Minutes of all meetings are available at the Coop. Minutes of the most recent meeting are posted on the bulletin board. Upcoming Meetings Board meetings are scheduled for: Tuesday, November 12; Wednesday, November 20; and Wednesday, December 18. Meetings are held at the First Unitarian Universalist Society, 405 Washington Avenue, in Albany (in Channing Hall-ring the bell for entrance). Note that the meeting time has been changed to 6:30 pm. Anyone planning to attend a meeting should confirm date, time, and location closer to the meeting date. |
