New Digs for the Bulk Aisle
In the last weekend of September, the Bulk aisle moved to its new location. My husband, to his delight, was the first in the family to experience the change. “I can breathe!” he exclaimed.
A week later, as I was mapping out the dimensions to create a map of the area, I heard the following comments: “This is a big plus. A Big Plus.” “This is nice.” “Wow. This is nice.” “There’s so much extra room, but I keep running into people who are looking at everything.” (Plus a few: “You’re mapping the new area? Great idea!”)

Obviously the move is welcome, although change means some readjustment. I knew the old Bulk aisle. Basically, in the old Bulk aisle, very roughly speaking, there were five realms: things that sometimes required a paper towel when filling a jar (refrigerated stuff and liquid stuff); stuff for camping (dried fruits, various nuts); stuff for baking. And then, on the other side of the aisle, were items that in our house we put into the Sin Drawer (snack items—chocolate covered raisins, sesame snacks, energy chunks…); and then Things That Bounce If The Bag Gets a Hole—dried legumes, rice, quinoa, couscous—things that, well, could bounce.

What’s the new configuration? The dust is still settling, so a map won’t be available for at least another month, and some of the descriptions in this article might not accurately describe what eventually develops in Bulk’s new home over the next few weeks. New products are being introduced and need to be integrated into the area. Previously, space limitations had dictated the placement of some bulk items.
The new, expanded space allows for more logical placement of items. Trail mixes, for example, are currently between the nuts and the dried fruits. Couscous is now with its close cousins in the pasta area. Gluten-free flours are separate from the gluten flours. And, although technically not part of Bulk, bulk herbs and spices are just to the left of the pasta wall, in welcome proximity.

This move is an organic process. The Bulk aisle will develop according to how new products arrive and how shoppers use the space. Enjoy!
