The Dangers of Fluoride

by Kathleen Boehning

It has been determined that, as a trace mineral, fluorine is important to the formation of bones and teeth. Fifty years ago, industry lobbyists convinced lawmakers to buy into the belief that if they added fluoride to the drinking water, it would fight tooth decay. Toothpaste manufacturers followed this line of thinking and added it to their products.

Studies done in Canada compared statistics in Toronto, which fluoridated, and Vancouver, which did not. Vancouver had lower incidences of dental caries. Dr. Limeback, Canada's leading authority and a proponent of fluoridation for 30 years, has now become active in warning mothers not to use fluoridated water to make infant formulas, nor to allow children under age 3 to use fluoridated toothpaste. The American Academy or Pediatrics, as well as the American Dental Association, are also recommending not to use fluoridated water to make infant formulas. Fluoride gel treatments contain extremely high concentrations of 12,000-20,000 ppm. The original assumption (by those promoting fluoridation) of optimal ingestion levels in children was 1 ppm.

Fluoride is a toxic poison that is actually used as a rat poison. If swallowed, it can cause fluorosis, which is a darkening and erosion of the enamel, nausea, vomiting or even death. The industry that convinced lawmakers to buy their product actually derived it from the waste from the process of making phosphate fertilizer. These Florida-based companies used air filters in smokestack scrubbers to capture the fluoride. However, according to Dr. Limeback, who heads the University of Toronto's Department of Preventive Dentistry, this captured product contains lead, arsenic and radium, as well as fluoride. Fluoride actually facilitates the increase of the transportation of these heavy metals through the blood-brain and blood-gut barriers. Studies in three states of 400,000 children found that, with the presence of fluoride, there was double the levels of lead. Lead has been linked to learning disabilities, hyperactivity and violent behavior. Fluoride has been shown to inhibit or even destroy acetylcholinesterase, an essential enzyme needed for neurotransmission in learning and memory.

Fluoride has teen recognized since the 1920s as a suppressor of the thyroid. It was a common practice the add fluoride to baths for patients with overactive thyroids. It suppresses enzymes and inhibits the actions of melatonin and seratonin. Studies published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) have linked increased risk of hip fractures with fluoridation. Researchers at the University of Toronto conducted a study showing that bone-fracture patients living in cities that fluoridate had double the flouride in their hip bones as the public at large.

Not using fluoride toothpaste doesn't protect us from injesting it, since a significant number pesticides contain it. One of the more commonly used pesticides is cryolite, which is sodium aluminum fluoride, and has been found in high residua1 rates in grapes, strawberries, tomatoes and potato skins. Iceberg lettuce has been measured to contain 180 ppm of cryolite. Not only do we find levels of fluoride in produce, but also in processed foods from cereals, juices and sodas to resturant foods and frozen entrées. Even organic foods may contain levels of fluoride if they are grown in an area where fluoridated water is used. A government toxicological report done ten years ago showed that residents of communities that fluoridated their water were taking in 3 to 7 times the recommended levels of fluoride due to its addition to their foods, dental care, and its use in swimming pools. If all this isn't bad enough, fluoride is also used in the manufacture of many pharmaceutical drugs, such as Prozac and diet pills, and in the most frequently used anesthetics.

A important animal study showed that there was increased levels of aluminum in their brains from fluoride exposure, along with kidney disease and brain lesions similar to those found in humans suffering from Alzheimer's disease. It's no wonder we have seen such recent dramatic increases in thyroid disorders, depression, insomnia, osteoporous, Alzheimer's, learning disabilities, hyperactivity and violence in our country.

It's like Dr. Strangelove said: "It's in the water! They're trying to steal our essence…"
