From the Groceryby Nate Horwitz For Your Table A lot of new offerings have come in from familiar sources. Annie’s Raspberry Vinaigrette isn’t new, but it’s newly available in monstrous 16 oz. size. Likewise Earth Balance Natural Buttery Spread, free of trans-fatty acids, is now available in stick form in addition to the accustomed tubs. (Take note, though: Though the Buttery Spread in the tubs is still vegan, the sticks contain whey.) Thai Kitchen organic coconut milk is new on the shelves. We’re now stocking Tofutti’s Sour Supreme, a non-dairy alternative to sour cream. And check out Yves’s very satisfying Ground Round. Zoe, of Spain, may be less familiar, but their organic extra virgin olive oil is well regarded: Iwon the 1999 best oil for value oil in the New York Times oil tasting. For Your Household While we’re on the subject of Earth Friendly, their excellent ECOS laundry detergent (with which my family has been quite satisfied) is now joined by their new, hypoallergenic Free and Clear, which takes great pains to be free of fragrances, fabric softeners, and other such potential allergens. Meanwhile, Heather’s Oxygen Bleach Cleanser is a good basic bathroom cleanser, very popular. And to our already substantial line of Seventh Generation products, there are two additions. First, disposable diapers, by popular demand. Also much requested, but more complicated, is this. For some time we’ve carried Seventh Generation toilet paper in single rolls, 500 sheets of 2-ply tissue. We still carry it, of course. But now there is also the option of 1000-sheet rolls of 1-ply tissue. The roll is about the same size, but breathtaking economy is suddenly possible—that is, provided you don’t just use twice as much. For Your Pets All sorts of pet-oriented goods are popping up lately. PetGuard Purrlicious treats are organic and awfully popular with cats. We treat dogs too: Ark Naturals’s Sea "Mobility" Chicken Jerky is a dog snack and simultaneously a glucosamine supplement, good for aching joints and for dogs who don’t take pills well. Another good glucosamine supplement is Way Cool’s VibraPet. Way Cool also makes a very popular hairball treatment for the cats; we’re having trouble stocking it fast enough. And to round out our new pet care items, Earth Friendly Products has a good kitty litter treatment-and to back that up, we’re also carrying their Natumate stain and odor remover, environmentally safe and specially formulated with pets in mind. |
