News at a Glance
The HWFC Board of Directors met on Tuesday, August 28.
Energy Reduction Task Force
The Board decided to create an ad hoc group that will focus on energy reduction in the store. Noting that the Collective Management Team has already been quite active in this area, the Board felt that a systematic review by a group with this sole focus might uncover more steps we could take. The task force will consider what measures would be possible in the current store without major expenditures (such as retrofitting). Any such recommendations will probably be applicable to a potential new store as well. Lenore Gensburg will be the group’s liaison to the Board.
Reducing Use of Plastic
The Board discussed ways to reduce the use of plastic bags and containers in the store. No specific recommendations for further action were made at this time. However, the Board has asked that the Energy Reduction task force take up this issue.
Policy Manual
The Policy Manual is almost complete. How it should be distributed was discussed. It was decided that should be hard copies for the Board and the Collective Management Team, another to be placed in the Community Room and a backup reserve copy. A copy will also be available on the Co-op’s website.
Grievance Procedure
A revised draft of the grievance procedure for staff was presented. The Board tentatively approved this version, pending review by the Governance committee, which will need to make sure the procedure conforms to the Co-op’s bylaws, and the Co-op’s attorney.
September Membership Meeting
Preparations for the September Membership Meeting were discussed.
Training
The education coordinator is currently conducting workshops for all staff on natural foods.
Business Plan
The operations and administrative coordinator reported that the Coop’s business plan is almost complete. She will circulate the draft as it now stands.
Sales
Sales are up over last year, but the rate of growth has slowed. There was a brief discussion of why sales have slowed. Some possible explanation are recent offerings of discount coupons, relatively low rate of advertising and increased numbers of stores selling a wide range of organic products.
Executive Session
The Board met in executive session at the end of the meeting.
Minutes
Minutes of all meetings are available at the Co-op. Minutes of the most recent meeting are posted on the bulletin board. They are also available on the Co-op’s website, as password protected files. See instructions on the website (www.hwfc.com) on obtaining a password.
Upcoming Meetings
Board meetings are scheduled for the following Tuesdays: October 30, November 27 and December 18. Meetings begin at 5:30 pm at the Community Room at the Co-op. Date, time and location can change, however, so it is recommended that anyone planning to attend confirm these.
