News From the Grocery

by Robin Skyler

For the thirsty

Sultry as the summer has been, we've laid in a number of new beverages at Honest Weight. Check out Switch Carbonated Juices-in several flavors-and Steap Green Tea Soda, "the first soda brand ever to be stamped with the USDA Certified Organic seal," in Raspberry or Lemon Dew. We've added two new flavors of Tommy's Naked Soda, too: Righteous Root Beer and Luscious Lemon Lime.

Apart from the soft drinks, we're carrying Lakewood's pure, not-from-concentrate Red Tart Cherry Juice, Eden's new Tart Cherry Juice Concentrate as well as their first Edensoy Chocolate, both of which are organic-and that is Fair Trade cocoa (Cocoa for which the farmers received a fair price. Check out the website, www.fairtradefederation.com, for more information about this movement) in the chocolate Edensoy. Other new Fair Trade products include two Mexican coffeees: Cafe Fair's Morning Blend and Zapatista coffee, which is grown in Chiapas. Closer to home is Kortright Creek goat milk, from hormone-, antibiotic- and drug-free goats grazing on the grass right over yonder in the Catskills, about halfway between Albany and Binghamton. We're also selling Evan's Raw Milk, which is produced by a New York dairy and labeled "For pet consumption."

Good news for the baker

Anyone interested in baking should know that Rapunzel's new Rapadura powdered sugar is now available. If you've ever lamented the dearth of organic, fairly traded powdered sugar in the world, Rapunzel has heard your plea. Also handy for baking are Zapatista honey (from coffee flowers!) and Arrowhead Mills' Multi-Grain Bread Mix.

Condiments, treats...
and whatnot

If you know I.M. Healthy SoyNut Butter, you may have noticed it's now available in Honey Cream. Puffins breakfast cereal is now available in a peanut butter variety. Two new San-J marinades are on the shelves: Asian BBQ and Japanese Steak Sauce. Also new is a vegan Vegetable Bouillon (by Rapunzel, again). And we now carry Annie's Tutti Frutti dressing, sort of a condiment disguised as a treat. Grainaissance has a new flavor of mochi that also seems to be edging toward treathood: Chocolate Brownie with Walnuts. More unabashedly snacky are Michael Season's Ultimate Cheddar Cheese Puffs, ZenSoy pudding in vanilla, chocolate and banana, and SoyDream Soy Ice Cream in several flavors. And we've even put a cherry on top-organic (and Oregonian) pitted cherries from Columbia Gorge.
