Remembering
Crystal Mae Dalton
Crystal Mae
Dalton, a
longtime
member of the Honest Weight community, died on August 5 after a long
illness.
Mae, who
was known to us as Crystal
for most of her time here, and only asked us to call her by her middle
name
“Mae” in the last year, was actually born as Susan Battalini. She was a
fixture
at our Quail Street
location. Crystal
was a volunteer for The Gentle Wind Project. She came in almost every
Sunday to
give people the opportunity to use her “healing instrument,” which
changed
several times over the years — having incarnations as a puck, and later
as a
wand.
Crystal joined the Coop and
became a
working member after our move to Central Avenue. She would come to
the store with a
revolving group of her kids, other kids and other adults, a group
affectionately
referred to as “The Dalton Gang.” A few years ago, Crystal brought her Gentle Wind
healing
instrument back to the Coop after a hiatus of several years. It had
changed
again — its most recent incarnation was a large poster and a tripod. Crystal did this
week
after week for no personal gain, and she and the Coop became well known
for
this. People came from far afield — once all the way from New York City — just to use Crystal’s
instrument.
Crystal home-schooled all four
of her
children. And she was a terrific gardener who was very modest — but
very
knowledgeable about plants. We will always remember Crystal as a
woman of boundless energy.
