Suggestion Box

Q. Can you get organic carrots in bulk? Sometimes you just want one.

A. We regret to inform you that we will not carry bulk carrots. Loose carrots will go limp and nobody wants limp carrots. You can buy a 2 lb. bag; the bag will keep them fresh in your fridge for weeks.

Q. Can we have fresh smoothies in the summer? I think they would be a big seller!

A. Due to space limitations, we will not offer smoothies this summer.

Q. Please keep the toy section. (I heard one of the managers/workers leading a group of other workers around saying it doesn’t sell well at this section.) I consistently buy gifts from there and like the variety and better choices then Toys ’R’ Us has! Thanks.

A. We are always looking for more efficient use of our space. There are no immediate plans for removing the toy section. Than you for letting your views be known.

Q. How about making sandwiches with tofu? The pesto sandwich is good but served so rarely.

A. Thank you for your comment. We offer specialty sandwiches (such as the pesto) on Thursdays and Fridays.

Q. Please do not begin to carry meat products. There are plenty of places for that. Thanks.

A. Whether or not we sell meat is up to the membership. There will be a referendum and a vote.

Q. Thanks for stocking “Pantry Pest Safer Trap” again. You also stocked clothes moth traps and they work great! Please try stocking both items!

A. Thanks for being nice.

Q. What ever happened to the “Mark-up Statement” of the Coop to find the best foods available at the best prices? Prices are going out of sight.

A. Our mark-up statement has not changed; wholesale prices have been increased by the higher cost of fuel and, consequently, the transportation of goods.

Q. No more, “made in China” products!

A. The issue of using boycotts as an economic sanction in order to bring about social change in totalitarian regimes is oftentimes thorny, as we sometimes hurt the very people we strive to help. Amnesty International lists the U.S. as one of the worst human rights violators. We support personal choice.

Q. Can we get the Ryvita variety “Flavorful Fiber?” It has oat bran.

A. We do not see that variety offered in our catalog.

Q. Please get some better garbage cans in the bathrooms so we don’t have to touch the lid to get the wastepaper in.

A. The Health Department requires us to have a self-closing trashcan.

Q. Which grades of recyclable plastics (i.e., 1, 2, 3) does the Coop’s recycling company accept?

A. Just the grade 1 and 2 are currently accepted.

Q. Can you get granulated lemon “True Lemon’s 40 Packets” mentioned in Prevention magazine?

A. Do you have the manufacturer so we can try to find it?

Q. A request was made for composting buckets (via a phone call).

A. The company “Down to Earth” offers a 2.5-gallon compost pail. Please speak with a HaBA representative for details on pre-ordering.

Q. To the “grocery nanny”: Hi! I was just wondering why we were not stocking Kafix any longer. Thanks.

A. Kafix is owned by the Nestle company, and we do not stock their products.

Q. Who cares about meat — we want organic beer!

A. We have to consider our limited shelf space, the expense of a license and the liability issues behind identity checks. You and other interested people should start a referendum.

Q. Can you stock unsweetened mayonnaise? Every brand in the supermarket has sweetener added! Ugh! Where are the old recipes?

A. Our mayonnaise does have minute amounts of honey and/or cane juice. Total carbohydrates per serving (1 TBS) are 0 grams.

Q. What’s with the fresh corn in the styrofoam and plastic wrap, and where are the husks?

A. That was the only way we could have organic corn for the 4th of July. We did not like it either.

Q. Could you please carry in the store, organic meat, fish, chicken?

A. We are currently offering these items by special order through the cheese department. We are working through the process of conducting a referendum to change the way we presently sell these items.

Q. Would you consider carrying one or two of the following product varieties: (1) South River (bulk) miso, Sweet Brown Rice, Hearty Brown Rice, Golden Millet; and (2) Nature’s Path Mannabread, Carrot Raisin, Rye, Millet Rice and Cinnamon Date?

A. We are unable to easily obtain the varieties of miso you request. We will continue to rotate the variety of Nature’s Path Mannabread in our limited freezer space.

Q. Maybe the deli should start making a “pack-up tray” of hot lunch. Don’t get me wrong, they are doing an exceptional job. It’s just disappearing too early: more, more, more!

A. We recently started making double batches. We hope this works; we need time to make the other items.

Q. Last year, we had soy (vegan) peach tofu in large containers, yummy! Can we get this again? Thank you.

A. They have been discontinued.

Q. According to many studies, soy products have very little and also adverse nutritional properties. Also, they deplete the land. Any considerations that the Coop might have?

A. Soy foods are a protein substitute for many vegans and vegetarians. They also contain isoflavones that are beneficial, particularly to women. We try to buy soy products that are organically and sustainably grown.

Q. Can you get an automated system for producing tags for bulk items? Customers would print a tag by entering the PLU number at the scale in the bulk department (similar to a store in Woodstock, NY).

A. That’s a good idea. Thanks, we’ll think about it.

Q. Do we really need to put the bike rack by the dumpsters? The new plan setup is great, but couldn’t we give bikers a break?

A. We will be ordering a bike rack and it should be here within a month. It will no longer be by the dumpster. Thank you for your patience.
