Earthly Bodies and Heavenly Hair:
Natural and Healthy Personal Care for Every Body is an excellent pick
for those interested in crafting their own body care products at home.
Author Dina Falconi is based in the Hudson Valley and is herbalist and
founder of Falcon Formulations, a line of herbal skin and hair care
products.
The book embodies 10 years of Dina Falconi's herbal experience and
contains over 450 original personal care formulas, including
comprehensive instructions for making your own natural products, as
well as the story of her journey towards becoming an herbalist and
artist of skin and hair care.
Earthly
Bodies and Heavenly Hair is 241 pages of easy-to-make, nutritive
food and herb based recipes. Falconi starts by explaining oils and
their corresponding skin types. Aside from perhaps jojoba, the oils
suggested--olive, coconut, grapeseed, almond and canola--are all
typically found in any well-stocked pantry. And if they aren't in
yours, they are all available at the Co-op.
In the chapter "The Joy of Facial Care," Falconi describes using fruits
that naturally contain alpha hydroxy acids in face masques. She
explains how the gentle stripping action of fruit acids provide
beautify the skin. Her recipes are quite inexpensive compared to the
prepackaged versions and once again, are food based. Falconi's
"Beautiful Hair Healthy Scalp" recipe contains only castile soap, tea,
oil, and essential oils--all of which can be found at Co-op. "A Word
About Soap," which explains how soap is made and how it affects the
skin, is a must read for all. You will also find extensive sections on
"Hands and Feet," "Lips, Mouth and Teeth," "First Aid" and specific
information for babies, teenagers, men, women and elders.
If you are a gardener, this book will put your herbs, flowers, spices,
fruits and vegetables to great use. Check out the "Vegetable Garden
Mask" (p.17), the "Chamomile Blend Astringent" (p.24) and the "Basil
Blend Astrigent" (p.25). If you are a cook, you will find just as many
good uses for your well stocked pantry of herbs, spices, oils, flours
and such. Crafters will also find this book a valuable resource of
great gift ideas.
There is much more to share, but the best is to come to the Co-op and
pick up a copy!
