| Honest Weight Food Co-op, Inc. (HWFC), an economic force in the city of Albany for over thirty years has purchased a new location less than a mile from their current location at 100 Watervliet Avenue. The site is 2.8 acres and will have plenty of room for an expanded natural foods store and parking for customers. The co-op had been searching for a new site for the past four years and with the assistance of Peter McKee of ReMax in Delmar, found the site last summer.
Plans for the new site include a classroom kitchen that will offer a variety of cooking classes from whole grains baking to gourmet cooking; lecture space for educational seminars about food and environmental issues; a full-service deli and bakery offering wholesome natural traditional, vegetarian and vegan foods; locally raised meat and poultry, expanded cheese & specialty foods, produce, grocery and natural health and body aids.
“We have been searching for a site that suits our business interests and our desire to be in a neighborhood. This site has it all, ” says Lynne Lekakis, HWFC Board president, “and we look forward to continuing success for our over 4,800 shareholders in the Capital District.”
The co-op board, staff, and members will spend the next few months designing an environmentally friendly community market space that will serve the entire Capital District as the co-op has been doing since its inception in a member’s basement in 1976. The co-op prides itself on being a venue for local farmers and producers and sees great opportunity for expanding its selection of locally grown and produced foods.
